About us
Here is some more information.
History
Our Clubhouse is a beautiful half-timbered black and white building dating from 1885. It was originally constructed as a fishing lodge/boat house for the Earl of Ellesmere before it passed to the Duke of Westminster.
Colemere Sailing Club was established in 1959.
Social
We try and make the Club a social place on all levels, even when there is no wind, groups of members will often turn up, if only to talk about the lack of wind, it’s a great place to be!
Social Events
However, we also hold a few social events throughout the year, including a pre-rigging party to welcome the new sailing season, a summer barbecue with “fun and games” on the water, the Christmas party, pub nights out and, last summer, we even organised an all-day barge trip on the Shropshire Union Canal. Of course, none of this is obligatory and if you just want to sail, that is perfectly fine, but, if you would enjoy more events, then you would be welcome to join in.
Just Sailing
All members can sail at any time, it is up to the individual to decide whether it is safe for them to do so (depending on weather, experience etc). However, on Sundays between the end of March and Boxing Day, and on Thursday evenings between May and September we organise races when the Club’s two safety boats are on the Mere. The safety boats are there to look after everybody who is sailing, so this is often a good time for beginners to sail, even if they aren’t racing.
Club Boats
The Club also owns a range of boats itself and these are available for members to borrow at no additional charge. These are often used by beginners or, perhaps, because you fancy trying a particular type of boat before you decide to buy one or, maybe, you’ve brought a guest along you want to take out sailing. The Club currently has a Laser, an Enterprise, a Graduate, two Laser Pico’s and a Topper.
