The Commodore isn’t all bad. He is desperate to have a reason to give away an amazing prize of enormous value at the end of the year, so he has invented the ‘Commodore’s Challenge’!
The Challenge is very simple; it involves sailing all around the outside of the sailing area on the Mere. Starting at Park, sailing outside Park (P), Woodside (W), Island (I), Bay (B), Capsize (C), and back to Park again. You can go whichever way round the Mere that you fancy, clockwise or anticlockwise and you can do it whenever you wish during the week.
You can either time yourself (we trust you!) or ask a fellow member, or ask the OOD’s to time you (but please remember they have other things to do on race days, and they may not be able to help you then).
Obviously, boats go at different speeds, so we will have a basic handicapping system. When you have completed a circuit and have your time, deduct the following:
- Laser – deduct nothing
- Enterprise, RS Vision, Streaker, Laser Radial, Laser 2, Byte, Wayfarer and Solo – deduct 1 minute
- Comet, Topper Magno – deduct 1.5 minutes
- Mirror, Topper, Pico – deduct 3 minutes
Once you have your adjusted time, please put that time, the date, your name and type of boat on the whiteboard in the Clubhouse. The times will be recorded and updates posted on the website, but everybody will be able to see from the board how they are doing.
You can have as many goes as you like in as many different boats as you are able to borrow, crewed or uncrewed.
If your boat isn’t on the list above, contact the Commodore for an extremely dodgy handicap decision or, remember, you can always borrow the Club Laser (or other boats) which almost guarantee you a fast time!
This should be something a bit different to have a go at, so hopefully as many of you as possible will have a go and have some fun.
